Tommy Edman - Steals eighth bag Edman went 0-for-2 with one run scored and one steal in Tuesday's victory over the Royals.
Impact Though Edman went hitless on the day, he left his mark in the scorebook during the eighth inning, stealing second base after being walked and eventually coming in to score on a Nolan Gorman sacrifice fly. Edman has provided some versatility for fantasy managers in 2023 with six home runs and eight stolen bases through 54 games while slashing .259/.318/.443.

Giovanny Gallegos - Locks down seventh save Gallegos picked up the save in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Kansas City. He allowed one run on two hits and zero walks while striking out one over one inning.
Impact Though Gallegos had some trouble in the ninth, allowing a leadoff double to Vinnie Pasquantino and then giving up a single to Salvador Perez, he managed to pick up his third save in the last five days to improve his season mark to seven. After the Cardinals' slow start to the season, Gallegos has had ample closing work over the last three weeks, picking up six of his seven saves in that span. Through 22.2 innings, Gallegos owns a 2.38 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 5.2 K/BB.

Miles Mikolas - Tosses gem against Royals Mikolas (4-1) earned the win Tuesday, allowing three hits and one walk over 8 scoreless innings against the Royals. He struck out 10.
Impact Mikolas turned in his second straight shutout start, moving to 20.1 consecutive innings without allowing a run. The 34-year-old also matched his career-high in strikeouts Tuesday, fanning 10 batters to pick up his fourth win. Through 12 starts (69.2 innings), Mikolas owns a 3.75 ERA and 1.29 WHIP to pair with a 3.87 K/BB. Mikolas' next start is tentatively projected to come against the Rangers, who lead MLB in runs per game with 6.3.

Lars Nootbaar - Out of lineup Tuesday Nootbaar (back) is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Royals.
Impact Nootbaar was pulled from Monday's series opener against the Royals after tweaking his back on a play in center field. St. Louis is off both Wednesday and Thursday, so a decision on a potential IL stint can wait. Tommy Edman will cover center and bat ninth Tuesday.
10 HOURS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Jake Woodford - Beginning rehab assignment Woodford (shoulder) is beginning a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Memphis, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact Woodford will work as a starter on the farm, though he's probably better suited for long relief duties with where the Cardinals' pitching depth chart currently stands. The 26-year-old right-hander had posted a 5.40 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB through 30 innings (six starts, one relief appearances) this season prior to landing on the injured list May 5 due to shoulder inflammation.

Adam Wainwright - Allows three runs in loss Wainwright (2-1) took the loss Monday, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings during a 7-0 defeat to the Royals. He struck out six.
Impact Wainwright completed five innings for a fifth straight start to begin his 2023 campaign and struck out a season-high six, but he suffered his first loss as St. Louis' offense was blanked by Kansas City's pitching staff. The veteran has allowed multiple runs in each of his appearances since being activated off the injured list and sports an ugly 6.15 ERA with a 1.71 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB across 26.1 innings. Given his history with the organization, it's safe to assume Wainwright's spot in the rotation is safe, but the Cardinals may need to make a few moves if they're going to fully snap out of this early-season slump.

Lars Nootbaar - Dealing with back spasms Nootbaar was removed from Monday's game versus the Royals due to lower-back spasms. He went hitless in his lone plate appearance prior to exiting the game.
Impact Nootbaar looked like he might have hurt his back after making a catch and falling into the outfield wall in the second inning. He was removed in the third after pulling up while chasing down a ball in the gap in the third. The Cardinals are calling the outfielder day-to-day. With a game Tuesday and then consecutive off days Wednesday and Thursday, Nootbaar seems likely to be out until at least Friday.

Lars Nootbaar - Exits game with injury Nootbaar was removed from Monday's game against the Royals in the third inning with an undisclosed injury, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. He went 0-for-1 bef...
Impact Nootbaar was chasing down a ball in the gap before pulling up close to the warning track and eventually crumpling to the ground. He quickly got back up and tried to walk off whatever injury he was dealing with but ultimately exited the field with the trainer. Presumably, the injury is leg- or back-related but the Cardinals should have more on the outfielder's condition soon.
1 DAY AGO • ROTOWIRE
Matthew Liberatore - Role not yet determined The Cardinals will no longer use a six-man rotation, with the fifth spot coming down to Liberatore or Steven Matz, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Impact The Cards shifted to a six-man rotation during a stretch of 19 games in 19 days, but they have back-to-back off days this week which will allow them to restructure the rotation again. Matz will be available in relief Monday and Tuesday, with Liberatore's potential availability out of the bullpen yet to be determined. Things certainly appear to be pointing toward Matz being moved to the bullpen for a while and Liberatore getting the fifth spot, but the team has not yet committed to that setup.
1 DAY AGO • ROTOWIRE
Andrew Knizner - Hits homer in loss Knizner went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Guardians.
Impact Knizner went 4-for-11 (.364) with two extra-base hits over four games last week. He's still good for one or two starts a week as backup to Willson Contreras, but there's not a clear path to consistent at-bats for Knizner. For the season, he's slashing .231/.259/.449 with four homers, 11 RBI, 11 runs scored, a stolen base and five doubles over 92 plate appearances.
1 DAY AGO • ROTOWIRE
Dylan Carlson - Hitting from both sides of plate Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Monday that Carlson (ankle) is taking batting practice from both the left and right side of the plate and has resumed a running program, John D...
Impact The switch-hitting Carlson had previously been limited to batting only from the right side in recent days while he manages a left ankle sprain, but he no longer looks to be inhibited while performing full baseball activities. Carlson will likely increase the intensity of his running program over the next few days before potentially heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment later this week. Once he gets a few minor-league games under his belt and is cleared to return from the 10-day injured list, Carlson should settle back into a regular role in center field, which would likely result in Lars Nootbaar moving back to a corner outfield spot and one of Brendan Donovan and Alec Burleson losing out on a near-everyday gig.
1 DAY AGO • ROTOWIRE
Alec Burleson - Pops fourth homer Burleson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Guardians.
Impact Burleson got the Cardinals on the board with the first of their three homers in the fifth inning, which was his first homer since April 27. He's hit safely in five of his last six games, going 6-for-19 (.316) over that span. The outfielder has earned a strong-side platoon role in left field while Dylan Carlson (ankle) and Tyler O'Neill (back) are out. Burleson has hit .240 with a .694 OPS, four long balls, 14 RBI, 16 runs scored, six doubles and a triple through 137 plate appearances.
