USFL Week 7 highlights: Birmingham Stallions beat New Orleans Breakers

Week 7 of the USFL season is filled with matchups that carry serious playoff implications, and we've got you covered with all the action from a Saturday slate that includes a pair of crucial contests.

First, the Birmingham Stallions (5-2) defeated the New Orleans Breakers (4-3) 24-20 in a battle for first place in the South Division. The Stallions held control for much of the game with Alex McGough scoring a pair of touchdowns. But the Breakers had a Hail Mary chance to win the game. However, the Stallions came away with an interception on the game's final play to ensure the victory.

Later, the Pittsburgh Maulers (2-4) will try to bounce back from a shutout defeat in Week 6 and take down the Philadelphia Stars (3-3) (9 p.m. ET on FS1 and the FOX Sports app).

Birmingham Stallions 24, New Orleans Breakers 20

All Alex into the end zone

After the Stallions kept the Breakers out of the end zone and forced them to kick a field goal on the game's opening drive, they responded with a score of their own. A seven-play, 60-yard drive resulted in a touchdown by Stallions QB Alex McGough that gave Birmingham a 7-3 lead.

Recovery to backflip

The Stallions were about to give the ball back to the Breakers, but a muffed punt by New Orleans allowed Birmingham CB Bryan Mills to get the ball back for his team. To celebrate, Mills did a backflip and the Stallions extended their lead to 10-3 in the second quarter.

Poling power!

Quentin Poling delivered a huge hit on a sack for the Stallions to help Birmingham's defense continue to dominate in the first half.

Vontae Diggs hit "The Carlton" after coming up with a big sack at the end of the first half to help keep the Stallions' lead at four.

Ricky rows in the end zone

Ricky Person Jr. scored his first touchdown of the season early in the third quarter to extend the Stallions' lead to 17-6. Once he got the six points, he decided to row the boat as the Stallions continued to push forward.

Breakers ball!

Jarey Elder came up with the ball for the Breakers to set them up in Stallions' territory. The fumble recovery allowed the Breakers to get a field goal and cut the Stallions' lead to 17-9 in the third quarter.

McGough on the mark

The Stallions QB hit Jace Sternberger in stride for a 20-yard touchdown pass that helped Birmingham extend its lead to 24-9 with a minute left in the third quarter.

Breaking back in

The Breakers made it a one-score game early in the fourth quarter when McLeod Bethel-Thompson found Lee Morris over the middle for a 10-yard touchdown pass. On the following play, Bethel-Thompson went over the middle again and found Sage Surratt for the two-point conversion that made it a 24-17 game.

From deep!

Matthew Coghlin's 55-yard field goal with roughly six minutes left to help the Breakers make it a 24-20.

With the USFL season heating up, the Stallions and Breakers brought the heat ahead of Saturday's big tilt between two of the league's top teams.
